The Full Spectrum Protocol: Nervous System Regulation and the Possibility of a Fuller Life
Neurodivergence asks us to look differently at the human nervous system.
Rather than focusing only on behaviour, we need to consider what may be happening underneath it. When the nervous system is overwhelmed by sensory input, emotional stress, anxiety or persistent thought, an individual may have less capacity for communication, connection, learning and everyday life.
This is why we believe nervous system regulation is such an important part of the conversation around neurodivergence.
The goal is not to change who someone is or to remove neurodivergence. It is to support the nervous system in finding greater balance, creating more capacity for the individual to access the abilities and potential that are already within them.
This is the fundamental thinking behind the Full Spectrum Protocol.
The protocol brings together Presence, Victory Over Thought and Cloud 9, with each remedy supporting a different but overlapping aspect of regulation. Presence is centred on grounding awareness and helping the individual become more connected to the present moment. Victory Over Thought supports the relationship with persistent or overwhelming thought patterns, creating greater space between the individual and the thoughts they experience. Cloud 9 is intended to support emotional balance and a calmer internal state.
Together, these effects are designed to work not in isolation, but as an interconnected system, supporting the nervous system from different angles and creating greater capacity for awareness, emotional regulation, communication and connection.
Liam has been on the protocol for the longest period, now over 18 months. Genesis was introduced around 10 months, to complement the Full Spectrum Protocol, with a specific focus on attention, focus and task engagement. His family, friends and community observed benefits not only in his ability to sustain attention, but his increasing ability to maintain two way conversations and regulate more considered communication instead of reactive engagements. In this way, Genesis became an additional layer within his broader journey, supporting the cognitive aspects of engagement alongside the emotional and nervous-system regulation supported through the FSP.
The underlying principle is simple: when the nervous system is less overwhelmed, there may be greater opportunity for awareness, choice, communication and connection.
In this sense, regulation can become the foundation for restoration and repair.
The nervous system is constantly adapting. Through neuroplasticity, the brain can change in response to experience. When an individual is living in a state of continual overwhelm, much of their capacity may be directed towards managing that overwhelm. Supporting regulation may create greater space for learning, adapting and engaging with the world.
Our Full Spectrum Protocol observational trials (x 3) in South Africa and Namibia have provided encouraging results. Across the combined findings, participants and caregivers reported improvements in communication of 51%, expressing needs 56%, social interaction 57%, school-related functioning 52%, emotional regulation 59%, and daily living 55%.
The consistency of the observations across different areas of life is significant as it suggests that when we support the nervous system, the potential benefits extend beyond emotional regulation into the broader experience of life.
Liam’s journey provides another perspective, as his family observed rather staggering improvements of more than 75% across key observational markers; greater communication, increased emotional regulation, improved connection, stronger focus and a greater ability to participate in everyday life with a calm and grounded sense of being, as a contributing part of the family dynamic – which is a phenomenal improvement from where they were only a couple years ago.
We believe that by supporting the individual to experience more choice, more connection we provide greater access to tapping into their own potential.
When the nervous system is supported, we create the conditions for a person to move from simply coping with life towards participating more fully in it, and inevitably living a wholesome, joyful life.
The deeper purpose of the Full Spectrum Protocol: to support regulation, create capacity, and open the possibility of a fuller spectrum of life.
