What can a tiny jellyfish teach us about regeneration, ageing and the messages our cells receive?

There is something almost unbelievable about the immortal jellyfish, Turritopsis dohrnii.

Just a few millimetres in size, this remarkable jellyfish has developed one of nature’s most extraordinary survival mechanisms. When exposed to extreme stress, injury or unfavourable conditions, it can reverse its life cycle, returning to an earlier developmental state before beginning again.

Rather than simply continuing along the conventional trajectory of ageing, it can, under certain conditions, reset its biological state.

The process is known as cellular transdifferentiation: specialised cells change from one type into another, allowing the organism to reorganise itself and return to an earlier stage of its life cycle.
